I am busy. Most students in college are . Schedules are made, people are seen, classes are attended, and on top of all of that, there is one additional thing that is placed upon us that not many universities outside of our sphere have: worship credits. For many people this is not a problem because worship credits are so readily available. We have morning meditations, evening worships, convocations, vespers, life groups, etc. The problem is not that we have to attain worship credits. In fact, for many, there was no problem last year when everything was lumped together in one pot. All that we had to be concerned with was getting anywhere from 45-60 credits depending on our class standing. The problem has come when in the middle of the semester, we get an email that a new type of credit is required: cultural credit.
From the faces of many people who I even mention the term “cultural credit” to, it invokes a visceral reaction of frustration. In the email sent out by the university, they said that they were requiring these things because they wanted to create more well-rounded individuals, and I get that. The main problem comes when the availability of these credits becomes so narrow in that only a few out of the many convocations are cultural, as well as music performances that are mainly done in the evening. I work in a job where I cannot go to many of these events because of the time of day.
I understand the need to create well-rounded individuals who know about the world around them. This is what I would like to see happen: have a time during the week specifically devoted to cultural credit. More notice on changes to policies would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps the summer before?
