State of the Union

Last Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave his State of the Union address. CNN has the transcript, which I read since I wasn’t able to watch the actual speech. I want to highlight a few areas that were of interest to me.

Trump said, “Many of us campaigned on the same core promises: to defend American jobs and demand fair trade for American workers; to rebuild and revitalize our nation's infrastructure; to reduce the price of healthcare and prescription drugs; to create an immigration system that is safe, lawful, modern and secure; and to pursue a foreign policy that puts America's interests first.”

I believe this is the case, and I really wish that our government was able to more readily see this. The recent government closure was a horrible reminder of just how often the labels we give ourselves in politics make it hard for us to work together as a nation. President Trump also said, “When we are united, we can make astonishing strides for our country. Now, Republicans and Democrats must join forces.”

We, more than ever, need unity in this country. We need our representatives to work together and stop fighting over little things. Above all, within the church we need to be looking at how to stand for Christian values. We need to stand for morals and what we believe in.

Like President Trump said, our representatives have largely fought and run under similar ideals. We need to support ideas instead of people and labels of political affiliation. The most important thing is who we are.

As Americans, in the words of President Trump, “We must keep America first in our hearts. We must keep freedom alive in our souls. And we must always keep faith in America's destiny -- that one Nation, under God, must be the hope and the promise and the light and the glory among all the nations of the world!”

As Christians, we must hold Christ first in our hearts. We must realize that freedom is in Him. We must have faith in our destiny and that God is above all and that we are already called to stand for Him in all his glory. Let’s keep unity in our sights.
