A different perspective

Zachary Hagen

We live in an age where the rule of the minority is becoming a thing, and it’s dangerous. Recently, Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. As many know, he was accused of sexual misconduct, but he was also cleared of the charges.

Before I go further, those who know me know that I am a vehement supporter of the voice of victims of sexual misconduct no matter how slight or how big. I have been sexually harassed in the workplace. I know how serious it is. Victims need to have a voice. I know several people who have legitimately needed help. However, not all charges are the same.

For example, last year, after getting out of a terrible relationship, she accused me of sexual assault. We had never even kissed and she was simply trying to hurt me because I had broken up with her. Everyone who knew me knew that I hadn’t done what she was claiming.

I’m not saying the accusations against Kavanaugh were false or that they were true, but I know that with every rape accusation that is flung for stupid reasons, legitimate victims who deserve and need our help lose credibility. Too often it seems, accusations like this are used to discredit someone in power that we disagree with. That’s not how we make a good difference and leave a legacy for those who will come after us.

My position is this: people accused of misconduct should be investigated. If they are guilty, they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. However, if someone is cleared, we need to look upon them as innocent and the accuser should face charges if the accusation was malicious in intent. Legitimately bad people should face consequences no matter what their crime is, just as legitimately innocent victims should be protected and defended by those who would harm them.
