Southern cancels SmartStart program for 2020, moves all summer sessions online

Paola Mora

In an email to faculty yesterday, President David Smith announced that Southern will not hold the SmartStart program this year and will move all summer sessions online.

“By going to all online courses for the summer, it is believed that we cannot effectively fulfill the purpose of SmartStart to help incoming students experience Southern’s campus life in person prior to the rigor of the fall semester,” Smith wrote.

According to the email, a free class comparative to the ones offered during SmartStart will still be available to incoming freshman, but academic administration is still working out the details.
