Campus research day gets new format

Zach Roberts

On April 11 Southern will host Campus Research Day (CRD). Differing from other years, a new format has been introduced where students in certain classes are no longer required to participate and, rather, those who join are competing for a scholarship.

The overall winner will receive a $1000 scholarship and each of three category winners will get $500. Additionally, the winner of the poster section gets $100.

“We are hoping that the competitive aspect will encourage students to submit proposals,” said Katie McGrath, CRD chair.

The proposal submission deadline is Feb. 15, but students will still have the opportunity to revise their titles and presentation descriptions after that date.

For those who are new to campus or have not heard about Campus Research Day, McGrath said, “The purpose of the day is to provide students an opportunity to present research in a formal setting. Papers will be reviewed before presenters are included in the program, and only excellent papers will be showcased. Of those in the program, only a select few get to compete. This makes it an accomplishment that can be added to a student’s resumé.”

The new format was not a response to the original format failing, but rather it was a cause of the program growing.

“Originally, it was just the School of Nursing, followed by the School of Social Work, setting aside a day to showcase student research,” McGrath said. “Eventually it grew and nearly every academic department was involved….It would be more correct to say the event outgrew the old format.”

Some students have already responded.

“We have received a few proposals already, and I am optimistic that students will take advantage of this opportunity,” McGrath said.
