Southern predicts: who is going to the Super Bowl?

Elisabeth Sewell

The time has come again for one of the biggest events in sports, the Super Bowl, which will take place on Feb. 3. The AFC and NFC championship games are next week, and the winners will face-off for the Lombardi Trophy. After watching this week’s football games, Southern students predicted what two teams they think will be going to the Super Bowl.

Tyler Bell, sophomore, chemistry

The Saints will represent the NFC because they have the best quarterback who leads one of the most potent offenses in the league, and they have home field advantage in one of the toughest places to go and win a game on the road in. And the Chiefs will represent the AFC because they have a very effective offense that will be tough to beat in a shootout. They also have the advantage of being at home in a very difficult stadium to win on the road in.

Patriots vs Saints. The two 40-year-old quarterbacks are gonna meet for the Super Bowl after a season repeat of the previous matchups. Brady's Patriots have had their ups and downs this season, but he hasn't retired for a reason. A combination of their recent run game, and the GOAT’s magic will bring them past the Chiefs. On the NFC side, the Rams’ excellent rushing game won't be good enough to push past the second best rushing defense in the league which will give Brees' Saints the edge in a likely high scoring game.

Kevin Bartolome, sophomore, nursing

I think that the Patriots and the New Orleans Saints are going to be in the finals. The Chiefs’ defense is at times non-existent, and I feel that experience will win out vs the Saints and the Rams.

Nathan Batres, junior, biology

Both the Saints and the Chiefs are going to come out strong in front of their respective home crowds this weekend. Drew Brees has had an MVP caliber season in reminiscence of his 2010 Championship run, and Patrick Mahomes is at the opposite end of his career looking to start his own legacy. Watch for both home teams to book their tickets to the Super Bowl this Sunday.

Benjamin Oliver, management, sophomore

Kansas City's offense is literally unstoppable. Patrick Mahomes can make every off platform throw imaginable, and when Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are bringing double teamed. Sammy Watkins is a very good third option. The Saints can take the NFC because Alvin Kamara is an explosive playmaker both as a runner and a receiver, and Michael Thomas has consistently been MONEY on third and long. Chiefs will roll to the Lombardi trophy though, again because of that offense, and the emergence of Chris Jones as an interior pass rusher.

Kohl Merling, business administration, sophomore

The Patriots and Rams are going to the Super Bowl. The Saints have lost their hot streak, so the fast paced Rams will run them over. For Pats/Chiefs, ain't nobody gonna beat Tom “the GOAT” Brady.
