Weekly Wellness initiative incentivizes fitness, offers free shoes

The SAU Weekly Wellness Instagram page, created by junior corporate wellness majors Kye Hache and Michael Specht, was created in early July to motivate students, spread health and create community through social media.

The page does two challenges every month, and a lucky winner is rewarded with gift cards, apparel, money and more.

The challenge that recently sparked interest on campus is a two week push-up challenge for a free pair of Adidas Ultraboost sneakers, a $180 value. Students were asked to submit a video on Instagram showing themselves doing push-ups. Hache and Specht found an inflow of students participating in the challenge with about 10 to 12 videos received daily.

“The latest shoe giveaway is to incentivize people to build a healthy habit of exercise and community around campus,” Hache said.

Not only does SAU Weekly Wellness do physical challenges, but ones involving nutritional, mental and spiritual health.

Though SAU Weekly Wellness page wants to spread health and community, they also stress the importance of having a Christ-centered wellness program that includes everyone. Hache and Specht hope to connect with fellow students on a fun, personal level through their Instagram page. “The purpose of the page is to spread a Christ centered wellness program through building a culture of inclusion and to engage students on a personal level and connect them with fellow students they wouldn’t normally engage with,” Hache said.

Not only are they working to connect students through social media, Hache and Specht are also working with the Governor's Foundation for Health and Wellness and The Healthier Tennessee Communities to assist them with spreading wellness at Southern Adventist University. Students may follow their Instagram page @sauwellnessweekly to participate in challenges and activities throughout the school year.
