Current, alumni GymMasters to perform at Homecoming

Southern Adventist University’s acrobatic gymnastics team, the Gym-Masters, will be recognized at the Alumni Homecoming Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 25-28. The Gym-Masters are aiming to involve alumni into the shows they perform throughout the weekend.

Gym-Masters coach Richard Schwarz is excited to show off both his team and the alumni’s talent.

“It is important to know how you got where you are and understand that the quality was there before, and you have to live up to that quality,” Schwarz said.

There will be a Gym-Masters reunion in the Gym-Masters’ Gymnasium on Oct. 26 from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m. where Gym-Masters alumni will join the current team to practice for the upcoming show followed by supper and a designated vespers.

On Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., there will be a Gym-Masters reunion worship in the Gym-Masters Gym, followed by the Gym-Masters Reunion Show at 9:00 p.m. in the Iles P.E. Center. Some routines in the show will be solely performed by the current team, but others will have both current and previous members of the team.

Schwarz hopes also to include members of alumni’s family within the routines as well.

“We’re all really excited for the Gym-Masters alumni to come back,” said Irvin Dominguez, current mens’ captain. “It’s really neat to hear all of their stories and see the past and present Gym-Masters come together to perform the different routines.”

Schwarz plans to have the team perform a skit covering C.S. Lewis’, “The Screwtape Letters.” He explained that because this is a Seventh-day Adventist university, he likes to incorporate spirituality into his performances, especially during Homecoming Weekend.

“You never know where people are in their life,” Schwarz said. “If they come back for something gymnastics related, maybe we can touch them spiritually. We can reach them that way.”

Although the performance on Oct. 27 is meant for alumni, students and faculty are also encouraged to come see the integrated presentation.
