The Southern Adventist University Campus Safety’s purpose is to protect the people and property on the school’s campus. However, many may not know what all the positions entail.
Lieutenant Stevenson Pangkey, the patrol supervisor for campus safety, said that there are three daily shifts at the department–morning, evening and night–and they are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“You start to look at students as family,” stated dispatch supervisor and former patrol officer Corbett Cole. “I feel like I am here to help our students as a type of parental guidance.”
During the morning shift, an officer does anything from granting card access to faculty and students to jump-starting a dead car. An officer working the morning shift may also deal with campus parking issues, especially in light of current construction.
The evening shift usually involves an officer handling theft reports from the day or lost and found. During intramural season, the evening officers are usually called to assist with injuries, as all officers are CPR and First Aid trained.
“Night shift,” Pangkey said, “is a little different from the other shifts. The officer on duty makes sure the buildings are secure, escorts desk workers back to the residence halls and checks fire alarms.”
Weekends and weekdays are usually no different for Campus Safety as they go through their rounds, no matter the amount of people on campus. Many officers said the busiest time of year is SonRise, the yearly Easter pageant hosted by the Collegedale Church. The program covers a majority of Southern’s campus.
