The Writing Center: a campus resource

Writing papers can appear challenging and overwhelming for anybody. There comes a time in many college student’s lives when they realize that they need help with an essay or paper. Southern Adventist University students can find help in the Writing Center in McKee Library.

Tutors are trained to help students become more confident in their writing skills.

Madison Carter, a tutor who works at the writing center, said, “The best part about working at the writing center is getting to meet new people.” Carter also enjoys reading the interesting topics students come in with as well as helping students understand what they wish to get accomplished on their papers.

Aside from correcting commas, tutors at the writing center are there to help make writing less challenging by providing tools that can make writing flow a lot smoother. The goal is to help students become effective writers in the long run.

For those who live off campus and can’t get to the library, the writing center provides help online. Students living on campus can make an appointment online to meet with a tutor in person.

Writing Center Director Sonja Fordham said, “We can provide more effective and more helpful feedback when we work with students face to face.”

While the option to help off campus students is available and helpful, she says that, “Online is second best option.” Being one on one with a tutor seems to be the best way to go.

According to Fordham, from June 2017 to May 2018, 2,993 appointments were made. Of those appointments, 282 were online. Students also completed 835 surveys rating their tutoring session either excellent, very good or good.
