Student Association is planning an event that will confront tough topics through live discussion called “Real Talk.” The point of the event is to create awareness and open conversation about issues that otherwise cause tension.
The concept of this event derives from the desire to freely talk about current sociopolitical issues such as gun control, healthcare, or immigration rights.
SA Vice President, Dylan Gibbons, reflected on when he first thought about creating Real Talk.
"I was having a conversation one night with my friends about issues like racism and sexual identity,” Gibbons said. “And we thought it would be amazing if there was a platform where students could hear other students and faculty talk about tough issues.”
The format of the event is intended to be like a late-night talk show. This also includes announcements of other events on campus, musical guests, faculty interviews and more.
Stephanie Trinidad junior nursing major and a member of the taskforce, explains her experience building the show.
“There is so much you don’t think about that goes into the program,” Trinidad said. “Finding the right students for each panel, making sure the video quality is good, and if AV is good. It is certainly fun to see how everything comes together.”
There will be a panel of selected students conversing about the topic of each night. Trinidad also continues to detail the qualifications of those who are on the panel.
“We look for people who are willing to lend their voice on these issues, as we know not everyone has the courage to express their opinion about certain viewpoints.”
There is a potential chance of backlash due to critical subjects of discussion, but Gibbons views the difficult task as a part of the Christian walk.
“The topics we have in mind may cause controversy amongst the students, but I believe that is part of our spiritual walk.” Gibbons said. “Not only to spread the gospel to the world but getting out of our comfort zones and exploring issues at home and how they may affect our walk with God.”
There are some details still yet to be known about the night. Whether or not, there will be worship credit, who is on the panel and who will be the musical guest but Gibbons states that the night will be open to the students to attend and witness the discussion unfold.
The event will be expected to take place on Thursday, September 27th at 7:30pm in the Dining Hall. The Real Talk will occur once a month and will be recorded to be uploaded for future viewing.
