All-Night Softball

Elisabeth Sewell

Last Saturday night, Sept. 22, Southern students flocked to the Summit Softball Complex to watch All-Night Softball. All-Night Softball is a Southern tradition over 20 years in the making. Teams play all night with double elimination and altered rules, such as a single strike on the plate strikes a player out. Each team only gets two outs before it switches from top to bottom until the final inning. After hours of games and playing into the early morning, around 4 a.m., the Bloop Singles and the Homies emerged as the SAU 2018 All-Night Softball champions.

The Bloop Singles, led by captain Brady Tull, senior physical education major, beat out The Boys in the championship game.

“It was a great experience to be able to go out there with all of my friends and play the game we love,” Tull said. “We just wanted to go out there and have a good time. Winning the whole thing was a great bonus.”

Staying awake all night and playing so many games is not an easy feat.

“The biggest challenge was keeping a positive energy throughout the night,” Tull explained. “It’s really easy to get down on yourself when things don’t go your way. But I felt like we did a great job of encouraging one another, which made it a lot easier to regroup when we would hit the occasional rough patch.”

On the girls side, the Homies, led by captain Natalie Diaz senior physical education major, found success.

Courtney Taylor, sophomore nursing major, said, “The hardest part of last night was trying to stay awake. But it was so exciting and rewarding to win the championship alongside some amazing friends and athletes! It was a lot of fun and we are already sad the season is over.”

So are we. Until next year SAU intramural softball, you will be missed.
