Creating a birthday bash

Raquel Contreras

There is little room for surprises during the school year, but for a friend whose birthday is coming up, surprises can be fun and exciting. They must be intentional.

The first step of planning out the birthday party is attendance. Contact a close group of friends who would want to attend and more importantly, are close to the birthday celebrant. It is beneficial to list out who is attending in order to plan out the location and the amount of food needed for the guests.

A good suggestion for location is to reserve a room in the dorms. Start by asking the receptionist for permission to reserve the room for a designated time.

For food options, there are coupon codes to order pizza and/or ride with a friend to get snacks and drinks at Walmart. If eating out is a better option, there are various locations outside of campus that will give a discount when your student ID card is shown.

For decorations the Dollar Tree can help with party accessories for a quick buck. There are banners, streamers, balloons and other necessities that will give the party style. A good idea is to decorate the door of a friend’s dorm to show appreciation for their special day.

A party is no party without a good playlist. Depending on the vibe of the party and the group attending, the music may vary but creating a set playlist can pump the festivities of the event. Plug in to Accent’s playlist if you need some ideas.

One last thing is completely up to those attending the event is the activities. Games are a go-to for competing with your friends. UNO, Mario Kart (if you are lucky to have friends who have a console) and mobile apps such as Heads Up are a great way to interact with guests.

Either way, the main point is to honor your friends and celebrate their new year of growth while maintaining a budget and still creating a birthday party to remember.
