Syllabus week is over, and the amount of homework, tests and quizzes are starting to pile up. But don’t lose hope. As a Southern student there are plenty of toolsavailable to make this semester as successful as possible.
Many students face extreme pressure to succeed academically, but they don’t have to remain feeling helpless in a tough class. The McKee Library offers tutoring at no additional cost for 70 upper and lower division classes, as well as ACT preparation.
Students can sign-up by visiting southern.edu/library. There is a section on the homepage called “Student Services.” Click on the link to the tutoring center and you can choose from multiple student tutors at different times. There are research coaches available who help students navigate the library databases and learn an organized system for keeping track of any gathered information.
Although academics are usually the primary source of stress in college, there are other factors that affect the mental health of students like major financial decisions, relationships and homesickness. Sometimes these things can be overwhelming; for those seeking Godly guidance there are three professional counselors on staff at the Student Success Center in Lynn Wood Hall.
“We don’t want students to have the stigma that counseling is bad,” counselor Ric Griffin said. “We’re here to help them [students] think clearly. Anxiety and depression are the number one things we see.”
